Discovery Health will be airing a television special about the Challenge on Sunday, January 14 and Monday, January 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT

See how obesity affects a vegetarian family, as well as a meat-loving one. Watch as a family of musicians, eager to hit the charts, hits the gym first. And finally, see the amazing transformation of Jeff White and his family from last year’s Challenge, who have lost a combined total of 200 pounds.

Wondering if all this trouble will be worth it? Let’s have a look at that guy after he lost weight.

nbc2

I’ll be honest, I won’t be following the diet plan exactly as written. I’ll be using some of it, but I had such good results with the diet plan I created two years ago, I have to use that too. I lost five pounds a week for six weeks, was never hungry and had tons of energy. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing some of my secrets with you in later posts.

Will you join me in the Challenge? I’d love to hear from you. Let’s compare our results.

NexGym is the new thing for parents looking for an indoor play facility for the younger set. What sets NexGym apart from other indoor play facilities is their focus on fitness.

ng4

Do you have a child who is hooked on video gaming? Have trouble getting him on a bicycle? Take him to NexGym where he can ride a stationary bike hooked to a video screen. The faster he rides, the faster his character rides in the game.

Do you have a child who is hooked on music videos? Have trouble getting her off the sofa? Take her to NexGym where she can play Dance Dance Revolution. She’ll burn calories and get fit, all while listening to her favorite tunes.

ng3

Kids 6-14 can play dodgeball or skip rope with other children, as well as participate in all of the high-tech activities like:

Hit dance numbers and exclusive new songs are the soundtrack for guided dance steps that teach you all the right moves as you follow along on your connected dance pad. This is a #1 smash hit with kids of all ages and a terrific aerobic workout.

Prostate Cancer Testing Can Harm Older Men

Friday, December 15th, 2006

From Yahoo! News:

Prostate Cancer: PSA Tests Often Given Inappropriately

The study findings suggest many men are being subjected to unnecessary anxiety about test results and a cancer diagnosis, unneeded diagnostic procedures, and potential side effects of prostate cancer treatment, says lead researcher Louise C. Walter, MD, a staff physician at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

“I’ve seen it happen to my patients,” explains Walter a geriatrician. “They get very worried and get procedures done to them that leave them incontinent and impotent for a disease that I thought wasn’t going to cause them major problems.”

Other experts agree the findings are cause for concern. Several studies suggest that men over 70 or 75 can indeed suffer because of the procedures used to diagnose and treat prostate cancer, notes Andrew Wolf, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Virginia Health System and a member of the ACS Primary Care Advisory Committee.

“There’s a good chance a lot of these men are being harmed,” adds Wolf, who was not involved in the study.

Holiday Hope For Dying Father And Ill Son

Friday, December 15th, 2006

feltham

UK: It’s too bad being a dying man wasn’t enough reason for Kevin Feltham to receive the treatment he needs for his bowel cancer. Even being a dying father wasn’t a good enough reason for Feltham, 44, to qualify for Erbitux, an experimental drug that encourages his body to fight the cancer which has moved into his liver and lungs.

Feltham finally won his bid for the treatment on his third try, according to Derbyshire County NHS Primary Care Trust spokesman Ian Beaumont, saying “In this instance the appeal panel was presented with some very specific and significant information relating to the individual case and made its decision with those circumstances in mind.”

What caused the turnaround?

According to Sheffield Today:

Kevin’s son Ben, aged 17, who lives with him in Bolsover, is due to have an operation of his own in a few months’ time to remove excess fluid from his brain – and his dad wants to be around to support him.

Dining With A Dieter

Are you or your partner dieting? Wouldn’t it be nice if every time you went out to eat you knew you’d be able to stay on your diet? Now you can. With the information on this website you’ll never have to hear, “No, let’s stay home and have a salad.”

I searched for restaurants in my area. I found two within ten miles and eight within twenty miles. The site is brand new, looking to launch early next year. Bookmark and check it often.

Dieting Tidbits:

  • Approximately 40 percent of women and 25 percent of men attempt to lose weight at any given time.
  • Nationwide, 55 percent of Americans are actively trying to maintain current weight.
  • Approximately 45 million Americans diet each year.
  • Polls found that 90 percent of Americans believe their peers are too fat, but only 40 percent believe they are too fat themselves.
  • A study found that 24 percent of Americans find fat people less attractive than thin people; this represents a significant change from 20 years ago when 55 percent of Americans said that they were repulsed by fat people.
  • What are your favorite restaurants that serve healthy food?
