When I first saw Voltage my first thought was that the drink looked like a nuclear blue type waste. Something that I would never want to drink. It reminded me of Amp energy drinks. I was also quite confused if this was actually an energy drink or not. I guess I didn’t pick up on the words “Charged” and “Voltage”.
After my first bad impression and being confused, I wasn’t planing on taking even a sip, but if the public (meaning me) created this drink, then it would at least have to be half decent.
So let’s talk taste. Voltage has a strong berry taste. On the bottle it states that Voltage is charged with raspberry citrus and ginseng, along with other natural flavors. The greatest part about Voltage’s taste is that it leaves a very sweet after-taste with a bit of a shock.
This is how the DEWmocracy website describes the drink:
You don’t just taste the intensity, you practically feel it. In our world, voltage measures a charge of Raspberry Citrus with a closing burst of Ginseng, all blended to “Shock Your Senses.” And after you’ve pulled yourself together, put that energy into our campaign tools and spread the word. That shock you felt up and down your spine? Mountain Dew® Voltage™.
From my own personal opinion, I do not believe that Voltage has the best taste out of the Dew family. For just being a berry drink it’s mediocre.
When it comes to the health side of Voltage one 20 oz. bottle is packed with 290 calories, 105 mg of sodium, and 76 g of sugars. It comes down to 2.5 servings of 8 oz. per bottle.
Here are the full ingredients in the drink:
Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, natural flavor, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preserves freshness), caffeine, sodium citrate, gum arabic, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), brominated vegetable oil, panax ginseng root extract, Blue 1, Red 40
Now, going back to my original thought of, “Is this an energy drink?” Well, I drank two bottles one morning and did not feel a bit energized, so I will have to leave that up to you.
Quick recap, Mountain Dew Voltage is a decent-flavored berry Dew. It isn’t horrible, and it isn’t great. If you’re into a “zingy” berry taste, then this is the drink for you.
