Pocket Shark

As the saying goes, “the pen is mightier than the sword.” Indeed, Cold Steel makes some mighty strong swords, but this little pen makes for some clever competition. Self-proclaimed biggest, baddest, permanent marker around.

Superficially, it shares many features common to most markers, but appearances can be deceptive. For starters, it’s made from the glass-reinforced plastic, Grivory, and features walls that are 4 times thicker than similar markers. This means it’s built for impact and, in a self-defense emergency it can become an efficient Yawara stick for driving off an attacker. Plus, the screw-top cap will stay in place and won’t pop off like a regular marker’s cap would when you strike a percussion blow, or when obtaining joint locks or submission holds.

It’s easy to carry too. Just clip it to a shirt or coat pocket, or carry in your purse, pack or brief case.

The construction site costs around $20 in Japan, is available in three different versions and goes on sale February 21. If you don’t live in this country and if you are interested in buying the toy, then you’ll have to go through some extra effort to get it.

TechCrunch Tablet B

techcrunch-tablet-1

Michael Arrington/TechCrunch’s low-end tablet, Prototype B is in working order: it features a 12″ touchscreen, Via Nano, 1GB RAM, 4GB flash drive, Wi-Fi and camera. The price is said to be around $299.

From TechCrunch:

We’ve completed our original goal of building a “dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web.” The hardware is nearing lockdown. Software development is rolling. And we’ve spent very little money to get to this point.

We’ve received thousands of comments and emails from people who want this device right now. We’ve had tremendous support from the community in helping us build the prototypes, and Via has been flat out amazing with their support of the project.

We’ve also gotten quite a bit of interest from the investment community. The real question for us is whether this project has legs and should go forward towards production units, which is a very big step from a working prototype. That would require spinning the company off from the blog and building a team around Louis. It’s a decision we haven’t made yet.

JVC UX-GN6

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

On January 7th, 2009 JVC announced three new micro audio systems, including one that features a motion sensor and JVC’s “laser touch operation” panel, a touch-sensitive illuminated control strip. In addition, the new micro systems are faithful to JVC’s reputation for top quality sound while also offering unique new convenience features, iPod connectivity in some models, and new, contemporary designs.

With the UX-GN6, JVC introduces a completely new way to control an audio system. The user “wakes-up” the system from standby mode by waving a hand in front of the system, illuminating all of the controls and the LED display. Another new feature is “laser touch” control of some functions. The system features two laser touch control panels – touch-sensitive illuminated control strips. Running a finger up and down over the strip operates the control. There’s one for volume and another that controls the CD player’s forward/skip and reverse/skip functions. Other functions are handled using touch panel controls.

The system also features a top-mounted iPod dock. A video output allows iPod-stored video to be played through a connected television Other features include USB Host for playback of music files stored on a USB mass storage device, a front audio input for connecting other devices, CD playback and an AM/FM tuner. The UX-GN6 has a total power output of 120 watts and comes with a pair of two-way speakers. All three components are wrapped in a black glossy finish, with the main unit accented by blue illumination of the touch panel and laser touch operation.

Also new for 2009 is the UX-LP5, an audio system that features a retractable front flip dock for iPod. The dock is contained in a damped door that opens gently when pressed. Other features include 70 watts total power output, video output for iPod, two-way speakers, a front audio input for connecting other devices, CD player and an AM/FM tuner. The system is elegantly designed in black with silver accents and blue illumination.
